Capturing personality with a paintbrush
Capturing an animal’s personality starts with observation—watching their movements, expressions, and traits like curiosity or playfulness. For me, it’s all about the eyes. Adding light brings life to a portrait, while body composition creates storytelling moments, like animals interacting or sharing space with unexpected companions. Using my own photos adds emotional depth to my work, with watercolours for detail and oils for texture. Take Shaun the Sheep, for example—his unimpressed glare during a photo-op in Oberon says it all!
